Reminiscent of old New Orleans-style Dixieland jazz bands, the Treasures of the Sea are something different, if nothing else, on today's indie- and synth-rock dominated music landscape. The female lead singer who perfectly re-created the soulful yet playful delivery of 1920's jazz singing was captivating and enchanting at times, while at others was downright difficult to bear. Rounding out the four-piece band were a great drummer, solid guitar player on the Dobro, and a clarinet player. I would love to make this post sound a little more professional by using the band members' actual names, but a Google search turned up nada.
The Treasures of the Sea were a surprising and enjoyable entree to The Patchwork Family/The Mooney Suzuki on Tuesday night at Sin-e. When it comes down to it, being a fan of music is living for that incomparable feeling of being caught completely off-guard.
