The Wrap: Ryan Adams & The Cardinals @ Town Hall

Update below from Nights One, Two, and Three...
:::Update:::Night Three
It started out as the greatest Ryan Adams show I've ever seen. Then the fans decided to start yelling. End of story.

Set 1: Come Pick Me Up, When The Stars Go Blue, Oh My Sweet Carolina, Love
Is Hell, This Is It, Afraid Not Scared, La Cienega Just Smiled

Set 2: Hallelujah*, Judy Garland, Wish You Were Here, Blue Sky Blues, Games,
Winding Wheel, Willow Jane, 29, The Rescue Blues

*third time ever played live.

Notes: Leona Naess opened, which was surprising and wonderful. Highlight of this strange show was new song, "Judy Garland (She Turns It Up To Ten)." Clearly my favorite new Ryan Adams song, which I heard from his recent Berlin show HERE. Pictures to follow.

:::Update:::Night Two
Apparently, highlighting Ryan Adams' outfit selection proved to be prophetic. Tonight's 'look' was much more Billy Joe Armstrong and even Gerard Way (sorry Ryan, but it's true). The genre of this evening's songs followed suit, with many of the more country-tinged tunes rearranged to fit the electric rock motif. Highlights from the evening included one of my favorites "Nobody Girl," along with "Dear John" (feat. Norah Jones), and an overpowering version of The Grateful Dead's "Stella Blue."

Set 1: What Sin Replaces Love, Nobody Girl, Harder Now That It's Over, September, Meadowlake Street, Freeway To The Canyon, Trouble On Wheels

Set 2: Easy Plateau, Firecracker, Goodnight Rose, Trains, Cherry Lane, Dear John (feat. Norah Jones), Stella Blue
:::Update:::Night One
Although tonight's music was excellent and well-rehearsed, the real story was Ryan Adams' outfit. If I had more time, I could easily write a novel about this one, but I'll keep it simple instead. Think of either Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears or Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes attending prep school. Blazer. Tie. Tight jeans...tucked into SILVER SPARKLING GO-GO BOOTS. No lie.

Set 1: Magnolia Mountain, Please Do Not Let Me Go, Dear Chicago, Peaceful Valley, Mockingbird, Tears of Gold, Nightbirds, Cold Roses, New York New York (slow), Arkham Asylum

Set 2: A Kiss Before I Go, Let It Ride, Bartering Lines, To Be Young, Blue Hotel, Beautiful Sorta, The End, Expressway to Yr Skull, Wharf Rat (jam), Shakedown On 9th Street, I See Monsters (electric)

Notes: Sean Lennon opened. He is amazing. Go buy his new record, Friendly Fire.
