From striking frontwoman Juliette Commagere's keytar to guitarist Jared Smith's Miami Vice suits, the 80's influence is obvious, and most people would stop there. After all, tracks like "Take it to the Maxx," "Robody," and "Which Side Is Mine" would be enough to rev up the DeLorean in all of us. However, after digging a bit deeper on this Ry Cooder-produced album (son Joachim is Stranger #3 on drums), one will find an endearing ballad like "Kubrick Eyes" and a calming country tune like "We Used To Talk," and will start to expand the limits of Hello Stranger's perceived limitations. I get the impresssion that this band is only getting started, and their debut should be playing as loud at NYC Misshapes parties as it does on Venice Beach.
As far as Hello Stranger's on-stage chops are concerned, after seeing them open for Kings of Leon at Webster Hall in February 2005, I can honestly say it was one of the more memorable sets I've seen in the past two years. Ms. Commagere is the type of Austin Powers FemmeBot who will draw you in with both her undoubtable talent as well as her dynamic look. Jared Smith is quietly regarded as one of the more underrated guitarists on the indie rock scene, and Joachim Cooder's steady beat is the glue which allows for all of the band's experimentation. Luckily, you will all be able to judge for yourselves as Hello Stranger embarks on its first nationwide headlining tour this summer.
