It finally happened. After seeing the awkwardly-named Vagenius open for Kings of Leon in February of last year (as a last-minute fill-in for The Features), I've been waiting for this. Silver Lake bands with serious talent, not to mention those fronted by a longer-stemmed Parker Posey type, are bound to break...it's just a matter of when. Sometimes it's by scoring a crucial opening slot, sometimes it's turning your trunk into a mobile Tower Records, and other times it's meeting the right A&R person at the right time. Many times, it's all of those things...and the band still doesn't break through. Vagenius was one of "those bands" for me during the past year. Each Wednesday, I'd open the Voice with the subliminal expectation of Pianos announcing a 3-week Vagenius residency, or that they are the opener for the sold-out Yeah Yeah Yeahs tour. Nope and nope....until now. Vagenius is finally on the radar (see the October dates at Pianos), but now as Hello Stranger. After checking out their site and their MySpace page, and before your knee-jerk "they sound just like..." reaction kicks in, close your eyes and think about this music being performed at Pianos. See you there.
