Sometimes I find myself in situations I can't explain. Case-in-point: tonight. Thanks to a generous hookup, tonight I checked out a private listening party for Ice Cube's upcoming album Laugh Now, Cry Later hosted by Cube himself at NYC's Canal Room. First and foremost, the album is blazin. With production help from the likes of Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch, and Lil' John, Laugh Now varies in style from track to track, representing the influences of Cube's West Coast homeland, the Dirrrty, and even a little New York City thing. The album also brings big Snoop Dogg back into the heart of the rap game, with one of his smoothest performances across a number of tracks.
After letting the party people get a taste of his newest work, Ice Cube stepped to the mic to express his appreciation for the turnout, mentioned how proud he was of dropping his first independent record, and reminded us that he'd be back to perform in May. Keep your ears peeled for Laugh Now, Cry Later which is sure to be one of the hottest hip hop albums of the summer (Street Date: June 6). Much love to Ice Cube for doing it his way.
