I am a huge proponent of musical performances being captured and distributed on film. The fact is, I can't be in New York seeing Jesse Malin and Jay-Z while being in Chicago seeing Wilco and Kanye, while being in LA seeing Snoop and The Shins, while being in London seeing the Arctic Monkeys and The Streets. I wish I could, but I can't. So, when NPR uploads live shows from Colin Meloy or My Morning Jacket, or FabChannel.com streams Bloc Party and Arcade Fire's performances at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, I begin to find numerous reasons to cruise the internet for hours (cooler than it sounds).

But, better than that, is when an in-depth film is produced to not only showcase the artists' music, but also their story. Their personality. Their relationships. Their history. Fans of Wilco were delighted by "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" and fans of Neil Young will most likely salivate over the insight provided by "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" which hits screens this Friday, February 10. Fresh off of a dynamite screening at Sundance, this documentary follows Young as he revisits Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in the summer of 2005 for the first show of his "Prarie Wind" tour, providing the engaging background of where he has come from and who he is now.
