NW Vol VII - Liner Notes

We're geeks, so I thought I'd geek out "iTunes Celebrity Playlist" style (props to Danny Masterson's music tastes), and put together my own notes for recently uploaded NW Vol VII.

'Battle Scar' by The 88 - Caught this band during this year's CMJ. 'Over And Over' is one of my favorite albums of 2005, and earned them a chance to rub up against Mischa Barton's headphones (sorta) on the OC.

'Today Is The Day' by Apollo Sunshine - Find a more wonderfully rambunctious song, and I'll buy you breakfast.

'Bigger Boys & Stolen Sweethearts' by Arctic Monkeys - Remember this band. That's all I'm going to say.

'Shuffle Your Feet' by BRMC - This San Fran band's switch to an alt-country style was one of my delightful surprises this year.

'Is It Just Me?' by The Darkness - I know, I know. You hate them. Well I don't. This song is an anthem.

'Dreaming' by The Izzys - Completely ripping off the Rolling Stones, but I can't think of a better band to rip off.

'Static On The Radio' by Jim White (and Aimee Mann) - My favorite track on this mix. White reminds me of Josh Rouse, and makes me want to drive across country, making up my route along the way.

'Crosses' by Jose Gonzalez - Jose will be 2006's Iron & Wine. The smooth singer-songwriter with mass indie appeal. Just wait. This track is almost spooky.

'In The Woods' by LEVY - The Virginia contingent of Newsletter Worthy described this track as The Strokes playing a sock hop. Right on.

'(So I'll Sit Here) Waiting' by The Like - On everyone's "Next Big Thing" list, this female trio has a very tight sound that I would describe as delicate rock...but rock nonetheless.

'Another One Goes By' by Mazarin - Saw them open for Rogue Wave, and I was sold by this song.

'I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard' by Nightmare Of You - Also, in the words of the VA contingent, this track has more hooks than a bait shop. I guarantee you'll be singing this song in your head after one listen.

'Wait For It' by Rogue Wave - RW is one of my favorite bands, and this is a fabulously soothing track of the lesser known 10:1 EP.

'Everytime' by Volebeats - Co-written by Ryan Adams, this alt-country tune recalls old Whiskeytown and The Jayhawks.
